    Identify Imbalances Early

If you have been struggling with persistent symptoms that standard blood tests have not been able to explain, advanced lab testing could be the missing piece. As a Registered Nutritional Therapist, I use functional lab testing to go beyond conventional diagnostics and build a genuinely detailed picture of what is happening inside your body. Rather than waiting for markers to reach a point of disease before taking action, advanced lab testing identifies imbalances and dysfunctions at an earlier stage, giving us the information we need to act with precision and purpose.

    What Is Advanced Lab Testing?

Advanced lab testing, also known as functional medicine testing, involves assessing a wide range of biochemical, metabolic, hormonal, genetic, and immunological markers to build a comprehensive overview of your health. The aim is not to diagnose disease but to identify the underlying imbalances and dysfunctions that may be driving your symptoms and limiting your health potential.

This approach is fundamentally holistic. It recognises that the body’s systems are deeply interconnected, and that a problem in one area (the gut, for example) will inevitably affect others, including the immune system, the nervous system, hormone production, and nutrient absorption. By assessing multiple systems together rather than in isolation, we build a far more accurate and useful picture of what your body needs.

    “Your Results Are Normal”

This is one of the most common and most frustrating experiences my clients describe. They have visited their GP, had blood tests, and been told everything looks fine, yet they continue to feel exhausted, bloated, anxious, inflamed, or simply not themselves.

The issue is not that something is being missed by their doctor. It is that conventional testing is designed to identify disease once it is already established. It is not designed to detect the subtle biochemical imbalances that sit in the grey zone between optimal health and diagnosed illness.

Functional lab testing operates from a different starting point entirely. It looks at how your body’s systems are actually functioning, not just whether they have crossed a clinical threshold. This distinction is what makes it such a powerful tool in nutritional therapy, and it is why I incorporate advanced testing into many of my client programmes where appropriate.

    Why This Matters

The value of functional lab testing lies not just in the results themselves but in what we do with them. A test result without the clinical knowledge to interpret it in the context of your whole health picture is of limited use. I use advanced lab testing as one part of a comprehensive assessment process that includes a thorough case history, dietary analysis, and an understanding of your lifestyle, stress levels, and health history.

This means that when your results come back, we are not looking at numbers in isolation. We are looking at a set of data points that tells a coherent story about your body, and from that story, we build a nutritional and lifestyle plan that is targeted, evidence-based, and specific to you. This is personalised nutrition in the truest sense of the word, and it is the foundation of the results my clients experience.

    What Advanced Lab Testing Covers

The specific tests I recommend will always depend on your individual health picture, your symptoms, and your goals. However, the main areas that functional lab testing can assess include the following.

Nutritional and metabolic health – Testing for vitamin and mineral status, amino acid profiles, fatty acid balance, and metabolic markers gives us a clear view of how well your body is absorbing and utilising the nutrients it needs to function. Deficiencies in this area are far more common than most people realise and can drive a wide range of symptoms from fatigue and poor immunity to mood disturbances and skin problems.

Hormone health – Comprehensive hormone panels go well beyond the basic tests available through the NHS. Adrenal function tests assess cortisol and DHEA levels to understand how your body is responding to stress. Full thyroid panels provide a far more complete picture of thyroid function than TSH alone. Sex hormone panels assess oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, which are particularly valuable for women navigating perimenopause or experiencing hormonal symptoms at any life stage.

Gut and digestive health – Comprehensive stool analysis is one of the most informative tests available in functional medicine. It evaluates digestion and absorption, assesses the diversity and balance of the gut microbiome, identifies the presence of pathogens, and looks at markers of gut inflammation and intestinal permeability. Food sensitivity testing can also be used to identify immune responses to specific foods that may be driving chronic inflammation, skin conditions, or digestive symptoms.

Detoxification and toxic load – Heavy metal testing detects the presence of toxic metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, which can accumulate in the body and contribute to neurological symptoms, fatigue, and immune dysfunction. Liver function markers assess the body’s capacity to process and eliminate toxins effectively.

Immune function – Cytokine panels measure the body’s inflammatory activity, while autoimmune panels can detect autoantibodies that indicate immune dysregulation. This is particularly relevant for clients with known or suspected autoimmune conditions or those with a history of chronic inflammation.

Cardiovascular risk – Advanced lipid panels go beyond standard cholesterol readings to assess the size and density of cholesterol particles, providing a much more nuanced picture of cardiovascular risk. Inflammation markers, including C-reactive protein and homocysteine, add further important context.

Genetic and nutrigenomic testing – Genetic testing can reveal variations that affect how your body metabolises specific nutrients, responds to different dietary patterns, and processes certain medications. This level of personalisation is at the leading edge of nutritional science and can be genuinely transformative for people who have tried many approaches without success.

    Advanced Lab Testing

I have been using advanced lab testing in my practice since my training at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London, and it played a central role in my own health journey. Through functional testing, I identified severe gut dysbiosis, leaky gut, low innate immunity, H. pylori infection, and multiple nutrient deficiencies as the underlying drivers of the chronic allergies, asthma, and eczema I had lived with for years. Without that level of detail, I would never have been able to address the root causes effectively. That experience is why I believe so strongly in the role of advanced lab testing as a tool for genuine, lasting health change.

I’m Timea Kiss, a Registered Nutritional Therapist trained at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London, and registered with BANT and CNHC. I am also Bsc(Hons) trained in Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy through the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION), validated by the University of Portsmouth. I specialise in immune health, gut health, hormonal wellbeing, and autoimmune conditions – helping people find the root causes of their symptoms rather than simply managing them.
