What Is Advanced Lab Testing?
Advanced lab testing, also known as functional medicine testing, involves assessing a wide range of biochemical, metabolic, hormonal, genetic, and immunological markers to build a comprehensive overview of your health. The aim is not to diagnose disease but to identify the underlying imbalances and dysfunctions that may be driving your symptoms and limiting your health potential.
This approach is fundamentally holistic. It recognises that the body’s systems are deeply interconnected, and that a problem in one area (the gut, for example) will inevitably affect others, including the immune system, the nervous system, hormone production, and nutrient absorption. By assessing multiple systems together rather than in isolation, we build a far more accurate and useful picture of what your body needs.
“Your Results Are Normal”
This is one of the most common and most frustrating experiences my clients describe. They have visited their GP, had blood tests, and been told everything looks fine, yet they continue to feel exhausted, bloated, anxious, inflamed, or simply not themselves.
The issue is not that something is being missed by their doctor. It is that conventional testing is designed to identify disease once it is already established. It is not designed to detect the subtle biochemical imbalances that sit in the grey zone between optimal health and diagnosed illness.
Functional lab testing operates from a different starting point entirely. It looks at how your body’s systems are actually functioning, not just whether they have crossed a clinical threshold. This distinction is what makes it such a powerful tool in nutritional therapy, and it is why I incorporate advanced testing into many of my client programmes where appropriate.
